Now
in her fifteenth year as the Lady Saluqis' head coach, Andrea
Martre has compiled a 242-159 record. In 2007-08, Martre guided her
team to a 25-1 record and a number four national ranking after going
26-2 with a number 13 national ranking in 2006-07. In 2000-01,
Coach Martre led the Lady Saluqis to a 22-9 record and a trip to the
NJCAA Tournament, the team's first national tournament appearance
since 1990. Martre has turned the Lady Saluqis into one of the
hardest working and tenacious teams in not only the state of
Tennessee, but the entire country.
In
her tenure at Southwest, Martre has been selected TCCAA Coach of the
Year three times and Region VII Coach of the Year once. Thirty-four
of Martre's players have earned All-West Division honors and
eigtheen have made the All-TCCAA team. In addition, she has coached
six All-Americans (Myquita Mackey, Amie Williams, Ashley Shields,
Candace Rucker, Starkitsha Luellen, and Kiana James) and one
academic All-American (Torre Thomas).
Martre has been able to bring in young women with the talent to not
only run her intricate system, but also be dedicated
student-athletes who have enhanced the Southwest Tennessee
reputation for developing the whole person. More than 85 percent of
her players have earned a degree from Southwest or transferred to
another college or university to continue their education.
A
native of Memphis, Martre is a 1985 graduate of Fairley High School,
where she was named team MVP and all-district. At Shelby State,
Andrea started at guard for coach Herbert Wright, and helped lead
the Lady Saluqis to a 27-5 record and a national tournament
appearance in 1986-87. Andrea still holds the Lady Saluqis' career
record for steals with 184. After Shelby State, she transferred to
Edinboro University, where she was a standout guard for two seasons.
Martre held the school and state record for assists in a single
season with 238 from 1990-2005. She was also named to Edinboro’s
All-Time Women’s Basketball Team in June, 2007.
Martre is a single mother, with one daughter, Monique McConnell, age
19, who is a sophomore guard for the Lady Saluqis.
