Josh Barton, a
former standout pitcher at Delta State University, is in his second
season as assistant baseball coach at Southwest. Barton is a 2000
graduate of Millington Central High School, where he was a four-year
baseball letterman under Coach Joey Nesbit. As a senior, he was
named to the all-district and all-metro teams and was drafted in the
37th round by the Florida Marlins.
Barton played two seasons for Coach Donny Castle at Northwest
Mississippi Community College, where he was named all-region,
all-state, and Northwest’s Most Valuable Pitcher as a sophomore in
2002. He went on to play two years at Delta State under Coach Mike
Kennison and helped lead the Statesmen to a 54-11 record and the
NCAA Division 2 National Championship in 2004. His senior season,
Barton compiled a 13-1 pitching record which ranked him in the top
15 in the nation in wins and was named all-conference and all-region
tournament.
In the summer of 2006, Barton coached the Dulin’s 18 and under team to the
“Best” World Series championship in Ft. Myers, Florida.
