SALUQIS SOFTBALL TEAM WINS TWO
The Southwest softball team won two of five games
over the weekend in Play-Days at Dyersburg, Tennessee
(Friday) and Senatobia, Mississippi (Saturday). In the
opening game of the Dyersburg State Play-Day on Friday,
the Lady Saluqis scored four runs in the bottom of the
sixth to defeat Lambuth University 6-5. Sophomore
catcher Courtney LeBlanc's three-run double tied the
game at 5-5 then sophomore Alyse Brewer singled in
pinch-runner Jackie Lloyd with the game-winner.
Southwest lost its next two games, to Bethel College 4-0
and to Freed-Hardeman University 12-7. In the
Freed-Hardeman game, the Lady Saluqis fell behind 12-2
through four innings then scored five runs in the top of
the fifth including a three-run homer by freshman
Whitney Witcher just before the 1 hour, 15 minute time
limit expired.
On Saturday, Southwest defeated Holmes Community College
3-2 as sophomore Staci Craig pitched her best game of
the fall. Craig allowed only three hits and no earned
runs in the five inning game. Against Northwest
Mississippi in the second game of the day, freshman
Maegan Wilson carried a no-hitter through five innings
in another outstanding pitching performance but the Lady
Saluqis' were defeated in extra innings by a 3-2 score
after allowing two unearned runs.
Top hitters for Southwest in the five games were Witcher
(7 hits, 2 doubles, home run, 6 rbi), freshman Amber
Gatewood (5 hits, double, rbi), LeBlanc (4 hits, double,
3 rbi), Brewer (4 hits, 3 rbi), and freshman Whitney
Grimes (4 hits, double).
