SOUTHWEST SWEEPS CLEVELAND STATE
Candace
Rucker (pictured at right) scored 26 points as
the ninth-ranked Southwest women’s basketball team
remained unbeaten with an 89-61 victory over Cleveland
State on Saturday afternoon at the Verties Sails
Gymnasium. Two players recorded double-doubles.
Starkitsha Luellen scored 21 points and led all
rebounders with 15 while Keona Brooks scored 15 points
with a career-high 13 rebounds.
Southwest (7-0, 5-0 in the TJCCAA) shot 51.5 percent
from the field including 54.8 percent in the first half
and led 48-21 at intermission. The Lady Saluqis also
outrebounded Cleveland State by a whopping 54-29 margin
and limited the Lady Cougars to only 35.9 percent
shooting.
The
Southwest men defeated Cleveland State 88-72 to improve
to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in the TJCCAA. Antonio Young
scored 15 points to lead three players in double
figures. Other top scorers for Southwest were Emmanuel
Cheers with 14 points and seven assists and Jeremy
Rodgers (pictured at left) with 13 points and 12
rebounds.
The Saluqis led at the half 54-31 on the strength of
outstanding shooting both from three-point range and on
free throws. Southwest shot 58 percent (7 of 12) from
behind the arc and 92.9 percent (13 of 14) from the free
throw line in the first half.
Both teams return to action on Tuesday, December 4
against Coahoma Community College at the Verties Sails
Gymnasium. The women’s game will tip-off at 6 p.m.
followed by the men at 8 p.m. These will be the final
home games before the holiday break.
