SOUTHWEST WINS EXHIBITION GAMES TO OPEN SEASON

The Southwest men’s and women’s basketball teams each won a pair of exhibition games last week at the Verties Sails Gymnasium in preparation for the 2007-2008 regular season which begins this weekend.

Coach Verties Sails’ nationally-ranked men’s team defeated the Saluqi Alumni 133-106 on Thursday night followed by a 117-74 victory over the Spirit Express on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore guard Dominique Johnson (pictured at right) led a balanced scoring attack in both games with 21 points vs. the Alumni and 16 vs. the Spirit Express. Other top individual performances were by freshman forward Jeremy Rodgers (13 points, 18 rebounds vs. Spirit Express), sophomore center Nick Stigger (14 points, 9 rebounds vs. Alumni), freshman forward Markecio Beal (13 points, 7 rebounds vs. Alumni), sophomore forward A.J. Nance (12.0 scoring average in the two games), sophomore guard Emmanuel Cheers (10.0 scoring average, 8.0 assist average), and freshman guard Josh Watson (13.0 scoring average).

The women’s team, coached by Andrea Martre, defeated the Alumni 84-71 and the Memphis Express 82-64 behind excellent play from the Lady Saluqis’ sophomores. Sophomore forward Keona Brooks (pictured at left) scored 22 points on 10 of 13 shooting to lead the Lady Saluqis past the Alumni then added 15 points against the Express. Candace Rucker, a sophomore guard who transferred from the University of Colorado, led Southwest with 25 points and six steals versus the Express. Other Lady Saluqis who had outstanding games were sophomore guard Daumonique Lenhardt (13 points, 9 assists vs. Express), sophomore forward Starkitsha Luellen (15 points, 14 rebounds vs. Express), and sophomore guard Tiffany Simpson (10 points, 6 assists vs. Alumni).

Both Southwest basketball teams will return to the court this weekend. The Southwest men’s team will travel to Chicago, Illinois to compete in the KKC Tip-Off Classic hosted by Kennedy-King College. On Friday, the 13th-ranked Saluqis will take on 12th –ranked Highland Community College, followed by a matchup with the host team Kennedy-King on Saturday. The Lady Saluqis will host Wayne County Community College at 4 p.m. this Saturday at the Verties Sails Gymnasium.
