BASKETBALL TEAMS HOST SPIRIT EXPRESS, STATE LINERS
The Southwest basketball teams will play their second
exhibition games of the 2007-2008 season on Saturday,
October 27 at the Verties Sails Gymnasium with the men
taking on the Spirit Express at 1 p.m. followed by the
women against the State Liners at 3 p.m.
Southwest opened the season last night against Alumni
teams composed of former Saluqis and Lady Saluqis
players. Sophomore guard Dominique Johnson scored 21
points to lead the nationally-ranked Southwest men to a
133-106 victory. Also scoring in double figures for
Southwest were freshmen Nick Stigger (14), Josh Watson
(14), Markecio Beal (13) and DeAngelo Riley (12), and
sophomore A.J. Nance (13). Stigger and freshman Jeremy
Rodgers grabbed nine boards each to lead Southwest to a
commanding 65-43 rebounding advantage. Former Saluqi
standouts Ronald Evans and Cortez Stigger led the Alumni
with 43 and 22 points, respectively.
Sophomore forward Keona Brooks scored 22 points on 10 of
13 shooting to lead the Southwest women to an 84-71 win
over the Alumni. Freshman Ashley Byrd (10 points) and
sophomores Candace Rucker (13) and Tiffany Simpson (10)
also scored in double figures for the Lady Saluqis.
Simpson also led the team with six assists and four
steals and Rucker led in rebounds with six. Larisha
Graves was the top scorer for the Alumni with 17 points
and also dished out three assists.
