SOUTHWEST SWEEPS VOL AND JACKSON

The Southwest basketball teams returned to conference play last week with men’s and women’s sweeps of Volunteer State on the road Wednesday night and Jackson State at home on Saturday afternoon.

Starkitsha Luellen scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the 5th-ranked Lady Saluqis past Jackson State 100-64. Candace Rucker and Raquel Brigham (pictured at right) added 17 points each for the Southwest women, now 15-0 on the season. Rucker scored 31 points and Brigham and Luellen added 15 points each to lead the Lady Saluqis to a 92-73 win over Vol State. Rucker also had eight steals while Luellen dished out a career-high six assists.


Dominique Johnson scored 19 points and Jeremy Rodgers recorded his third straight double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Southwest men to an 82-70 win over Jackson State. A.J. Nance scored 16 points to lead six Saluqi double figure scorers in a 124-79 win over Vol State. DeAngelo Riley (pictured at left) had his third double-double of the season with 14 points and 13 rebounds and also blocked six shots.
