SALUQIS' BASEBALL TEAM ELIMINATED FROM REGION VII TOURNEY WITH LOSS TO VOL STATE

The Southwest baseball team (24-29) saw its season come to an end Monday in the third round of the TJCCAA/NJCAA Region 7 tournament at Columbia, Tenn., with a 12-8 loss to Volunteer State. Sophomore third baseman Devin Hicks hit two home runs and drove in four.

The Saluqis started tournament play on May 2 with a 5-1 victory over Motlow State.  Sophomore righthander Colby Fitzpatrick pitched a nine-inning two-hitter and struck out five to earn the pitching victory.

Southwest lost to 2nd-ranked Walters State, 4-3, on May 3 despite an outstanding pitching effort by freshman lefthander Matt Ince, who allowed just one earned run and struck out a career-high 11 batters in six innings.  On Sunday, the Saluqis beat Jackson State 11-4 as sophomore leftfielder Billy Ray Todd had four hits and three RBI and freshman designated hitter Chris Coleman slugged two homers with five RBI.
